For this project, I started out with an extremely oversized men’s shirt and draped it to fit the female form. I played around with different ways to make the shirt smaller and create something wearable and feminine, without losing all the masculine elements. I loved how the shirt looked with the buttons to the side and just went from there. I sculpted out the front first and then moved to the back. I loved the how the pleats looked wrapping around the figure and really found my inspiration from there. My garment started to take a very feminine, 50s-esque look. I love the fashion of the 5os and how the gender norms of the time were reflected in the clothing. Women's role in society at the time was focused on staying home and raising a family, and the clothing really mirrored this (think Claire McCardell's Popover Dress). I wanted to turn the traditional mens clothing of the time and juxtapose it with my feminine silhouette, being for the modern woman. This is what inspired my choice of material, thick grey flannel, for this garment. The modern woman which I designed this dress for, embraces her femininity and goes against the role society has set for her. She can do anything a man does, while in heels and a dress, which is exacly what this Dress encompases.
